When you cross a Poodle with another breed, you’re adding some very desirable traits for any pet dog - the Poodle temperament, and the Poodle coat.
Poodles are devoted companions, preferring to be near their people and to please their people above everything else. They have keen intelligence, impressive agility, and thoroughly enjoy all types of games and training. Originally sporting dogs, there are Poodles working in the hunting field to this day.
Our Doodles are Toy or Miniature Poodles intentionally cross-bred with Golden Retrievers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
Golden Retrievers add sturdiness and a healthier head and jaw shape, along with a nice dose of the Golden Retriever's best traits of friendliness to all, bravery and of course that natural retriever instinct.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a breed in crisis, and we are proud to be part of a worldwide effort to retain their best traits in a healthy and functional version with our Golden Cavapoos.
Cavaliers add a unique, loving Spaniel temperament much beloved by their families, along with that soulful expression that no one can resist.
The Poodle/Doodle coat is often called “hypo-allergenic”, which can be a little misleading.
While Poodles and Doodles can be an ideal choice for many who suffer from allergies, it’s important to know that allergic reactions can be caused by the fur, dander, or saliva of dogs, and the Poodle coat alone won’t necessarily solve all of the problem.
If you are allergic to dog fur or dander, you will benefit from a Doodle who has the appropriate Poodle coat genes.
Similarly, Poodles and Doodles are not “non shedding” - but provided the correct Poodle coat genes are present, they are very, very low shedding. We never find dog hair or fur around the house, the very minimal amount of shed comes out during brushing.
These traits are a huge benefit for many of those with allergies and pretty nice for the rest of us, too.
"I wish my dog would shed more!" - said no one, ever.
Before the term “Doodle” became popular, the puppies from intentional Poodle cross-breeding were named with the suffix “Poo” for “Poodle” - examples are “Cockapoo” (Cocker Spaniel/Poodle) or “Maltipoo” (Maltese/Poodle).
We breed Goldendoodles and Golden Cavapoos, so we have a paw in each naming tradition.
In Australia, Goldendoodles go by the adorable name “Groodles”
Cockapoos (Cocker Spaniel/Poodle mixes) were the first to gain widespread popularity in the 1960s, and Labradoodle and Goldendoodle breeding began at around the same time.
Monica Dickens, a great-granddaughter of the author Charles Dickens, bred Goldendoodles in the 1960s after she moved from England to the United States, to provide guide dogs for blind owners with allergies.
Goldendoodles and Cavapoos (and many other Doodles and Poos) have seen a strong rise in popularity in the past 30 years, with no sign of stopping.
The most popular Doodles in the U.S. are the Goldendoodles, in their various sizes.
